WHAT MAKES ME HOPEFUL?
“Without a minimum of hope, we cannot so much as start the struggle” (words by Paulo Freire in Pedagogy of Hope). So, I am hopeful out of pure imperative!
WHAT MAKES YOU ANGRY?
I am angry at how, despite many incredibly hard-working and caring individuals within the system, mainstream school still manages to reproduce systems of power under the guise of ‘equal opportunity’ and ‘access’ through entrenched individualistic practices that serve the market, from high-stakes testing and performance pressures to hyper-surveillance of POC youth and tokenistic inclusion initiatives.
Bio
I have an MA in Social Justice and Education from UCL, and a background in teaching, having trained and qualified with Teach First in 2016. I taught secondary school Mathematics in the UK and Turkey for six years before leaving mainstream teaching in search of more inspiring, equitable learning spaces for young people. That path led me into the third sector—namely through anti-racism facilitation and resource development with Intersect Madrid. I’ve also worked with the Isla Foundation, where I developed and delivered a small annual grants programme supporting creative, education-focused non-profits. I now work within the development team at The Advocacy Academy, with a focus on income diversification—namely corporate partnerships, high-net-worth individuals, and digital fundraising.
When I allow myself the time, I love to kick back with a rooibos tea, some Fairuz through the speaker, candles lit, and do arty things like digital illustration, water-colouring and embroidery.
